Phipps Goes Wild, But Tigers Win
|
South Mississippi first baseman Mike Phipps was sensational. He went 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5, but it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. LSU beat the Golden Eagles, 11-9. Phipps was named the player of the game despite the loss. LSU reliever John Hudson picked up the win, bumping his record to 1-0. Mike Vega was collared with the loss. Nate Heide sewed up the save, his 5th.
A crucial at-bat came with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when first baseman Ryan Strader hit a run-scoring single. The Tigers went on to win.
"We got the victory," said Strader. "That's all that matters at the end of the day."
LSU is now 5-7, South Mississippi 7-5.
