Lerna right fielder Art Branon played a vital role in his team's 8-6 conquest of Santa Clara. He hit 2 home runs, while adding 7 RBI and scoring twice for Lerna. James Poling, now 1-4, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings. By defeating Santa Clara, the second-place Lions improved to 28-23.

The game was decided with no one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Lerna trailing 6-4, Branon jumped on a slider from 16-year old left-handed pitcher Steve Merriman and hit a grand slam home run to left-center. With one swing, the Lions had a walk-off win.

"What a rush!" said a smiling Branon.
