The Hawaii Honu defeated the Manhattan Slice, 9-5, in part because of designated hitter Carlos Nieto. Nieto was 4 for 5 with a home run and 2 doubles. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Honu. Fernando Vazquez earned the win for Hawaii. He lasted 5.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 2. With the win, he raised his record to 9-7. The third-place Honu are 76-70.

Hawaii used a well-timed hit by Aaron Gross to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Honu ahead, 3-0. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.

"I just try to go out and give it 100 percent every game," Nieto told a local reporter after the game. "That's my mantra, and like today, it will pay off more often than not."
