Cortez Handcuffs Pioneers, Jazz Seize 2-0 Advantage in R1
Ivan Cortez pitched a gem to help the Montreal Jazz escape with a tight 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Pioneers in a low-scoring Round 1 contest today. The left-handed Cortez threw 7.1 innings of shutout ball in the win, just enough for the Jazz on a day when their offense dried up. Montreal now leads the best-of-7 series 2-0.

Cortez, the Montreal left-hander, went 7.1 innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits. He collected 8 strikeouts.

"The team always comes first, so pulling out the win on a day like today is the most important thing," Cortez told a reporter while responding to autograph requests. "Our fans like to come out to see a win, so I'm happy to do what I can to give them that."

The next game is set to be played for Monday, October 21st , 2052 at "The Fort" at B.C. Place in Vancouver.
