A nice crowd turned out for a clash between the Yuma Varmits and Normal Nutcrackers.

Yuma Varmits starter Juan Cruz was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Normal Nutcrackers, 10-3. Cruz, now 2-0, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 9, walking 3, and allowing 3 runs.

Hiroyoshi Tanabe had a big grand slam home run for the Varmits in the top of the ninth inning. With Yuma leading 6-3 and the bases loaded, he sized up a fastball from 21-year old right-handed pitcher Jon Santiago and punished it. The result was his 3rd home run of the season, which put the Varmits on top, 10-3.

"When you don't put the pitches where they're supposed to be, they hit you hard," said Normal skipper Arnold Layne.

The second-place Varmits now have a record of 50-29.
