The 3-hit performance of Jeff Gifford, who is a three-time All-Star, helped the El Paso Mavericks beat the Cabo San Lucas Toreros, 5-1. With the win, El Paso has a record of 71-58. Cabo San Lucas falls to 56-71.

Joe Cloutier had a big solo home run for the Mavericks in the bottom of the fifth inning. With El Paso leading 2-1 and the bases empty, he sized up a sinker from 33-year old right-handed pitcher Miguel Arroyo and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Mavericks on top, 3-1.
