Paiz, Beaches March to 9-1 Victory
|
The Cozumel Beaches defeated the Joplin Fireballs, 9-1, at The Firepit. Cozumel was led by 22-year old right fielder Antonio Paiz, who was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Tony Leija, the winner, improved to 5-3. He held the Fireballs to 1 run on 5 hits over 8 innings, while striking out 6 and walking 1. The loss makes Joplin 23-34.
With Cozumel leading 2-0 in the top of the fifth, Paiz hit a changeup from Nate Lefkowitz for a 2-run home run. It was his 9th home run of the season and put the Beaches ahead, 4-0.
Paiz said, "Whether you hit the ball hard, you walk, you have a long at-bat, 10 or 12 pitches, or you hit a homer, you're just trying to do anything you can do to help the team win."
