Fernandez Steals Spotlight, But Last Laugh Belongs to Victoria
Fans of the Victoria Vikings who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Victoria win over the visiting Ocala Knights, 9-8. Brandon Cockrell started for the home team against Jerry Cardenas. Danny Fernandez earned accolades for his performance. Gabe Ayala earned the win after being brought in from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed 3 runs on 4 hits in 1.2 innings. His record is now 1-0.

The Vikings beat the Knights in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Alex Najera produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Taichi Kimura, Najera gave his team the lead, 9-8, when he hit a 2-run single.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Najera said.
