The Nichols Gnats locked up a win at The Pond, knocking off the Charleston Panthers, 8-4. On the mound for Nichols was right-hander Enrique Cuellar. He played a major role in the triumph. Damian Camacho earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.2 innings. He upped his record to 2-2. Nichols has now won 5 straight, while the Panthers have lost 3 in a row.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Marc Turner came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Charleston pitcher Sergio Hernandez, he hit a first pitch splitter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Nichols on top, 5-4.
"I thought we competed really well," said Gnats manager Mike Nevil. "I thought the energy was really good."
