Birdwings Get Hard-Earned Win
The Hazleton Birdwings withstood an impressive performance by Carmel shortstop Raul Altamirano to defeat the Apples, 7-6, at Road Warriors Field. Altamirano went 2-2 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Matt Matsch snagged the win in relief. He goes to 2-0 on the season. Jeff Gamble suffered the loss. The Birdwings sport a record of 27-47.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Hazleton pinch hitter Jeremy Lepage, facing Jeff Gamble, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Birdwings the 7-6 win.

"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," Lepage said in his postgame press conference.
