Victor Cortez of the Memphis Blues was on top of his game.

The 24-year-old tantalized the Houston Sting with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.

"He had the changeup working," Houston manager Barnabé Bacm said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Memphis hurler had 12 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Cortez told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Up to now Cortez has recorded a record of 10-3. In 20 starts he has fanned 131 batters in 123.1 innings with a 3.43 ERA.
