Riding the 2-hit performance of the 24-year old shortstop Bob Portillo, the Charleston Panthers stopped the Chippewa River Chiefs, 10-2, in 9 innings. The win was credited to 21-year old right-handed pitcher Ernie Gillingham in relief. His record improves to 4-4. Diego Pais took the loss. The last-place Panthers are now 53-104, the River Chiefs 93-63.

The game turned with no one out in the top of the fourth. That's when Portillo hit a grand slam home run off Diego Pais. It propelled the Panthers into the lead, 4-0.

"We understand we didn't play our best baseball," said losing manager Pang Yip. "We'll shower it off and be ready to compete."
