Sam Hickey of the West Island Jazz was on top of his game.

The 27-year-old tantalized the Bloomington Blazers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 2-0.

"He had the changeup working," Bloomington manager Scott Andrews said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The West Island hurler had 3 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.

Hickey told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Up to now Hickey has recorded a record of 8-7. In 17 starts he has fanned 95 batters in 130 innings with a 3.18 ERA.
