Jeff Stephens never let Evanston get something going. The Sandy Springs right-hander commanded his curveball in pitching the Spartans to a 4-1 win. Stephens, now 4-1, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 7, walking 4, and allowing 1 run. Victor Crawford earned the save, his 8th, for the Spartans.

Ron Goodwin had a big 2-run double for the Spartans in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Sandy Springs leading 2-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a slider from Symão Alegro, who is tied for 4th in the TAA in strikeouts with 42, and swatted a double to right. It was his 4th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Spartans ahead, 4-0.

"Watch and learn," said Goodwin. "This is what good pitching looks like."

The 5th-place Spartans are 17-17.
