The DeKalb Cornhuskers got a superb performance from pitcher Bobby Avelar, but the Wichita Wolverines still won the game, 4-3. Avelar threw 5.1 innings of shutout ball. Picking up the save was 22-year old right-handed pitcher Steve Saeger. The Wolverines sport a record of 20-33.

Ernest Fortin dealt the Cornhuskers a blow in the bottom of the sixth. Batting with the bases loaded and Wichita leading 2-1, Fortin hit a first pitch changeup for a 2-run single.

"We came out on the wrong end of this one," said DeKalb skipper Kinnojo Hara.
