In a low-scoring affair between the Rock River Rats and the DeKalb Cornhuskers, pitcher Jimmy Welch was the difference between victory and defeat. The Rock River right-hander earned accolades for his stellar performance in the 3-0 Rats win. Ralph Elliott earned the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.2 innings. He upped his record to 2-2. Earning the save was Chuck Green. He's now cashed in 10 of 14 save opportunities.

The Cornhuskers had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Rats going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old first baseman Amlak Sang came to the plate. Sang hit a solo home run on a first pitch fastball from DeKalb hurler Bobby Avelar. It was Sang's 10th home run of the year.

"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said Welch.

The Rats are now 45-48, while the Cornhuskers fall to 40-53.
